University of Tübingen

Eberhard Karls University, Tübingen (German: Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, sometimes called the “Eberhardina Carolina”) is a public university located in the city of Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is one of Germany’s oldest universities, internationally noted in medicine, natural sciences and the humanities. In the area of German Studies (German: Germanistik) it has been ranked first among all German universities for many years. Tübingen is one of five classical “university towns” in Germany; the other four being Marburg, Göttingen, Freiburg and Heidelberg. The university is associated with some Nobel laureates, especially in the fields of medicine and chemistry.

Currently, around 22,000 students are enrolled. The 17 hospitals in Tübingen affiliated with the university’s faculty of medicine have 1,500 patient beds, and cater to 66,000 in-patients and 200,000 out-patients on an annual basis.

The University of Tübingen undertakes a broad range of research projects in various fields. The most prominent ones are to be found among the natural sciences. The Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research, for instance, focuses on general, cognitive and cellular neurology as well as neurodegeneration. The Centre for Interdisciplinary Clinical Research deals primarily with cell biology in diagnostics and therapy of organ system diseases.

The University of Tübingen was founded in 1477 by Count Eberhard V (Eberhard im Bart, 1445 – 1496), later the first Duke of Württemberg, a civic and ecclesiastic reformer who established the school after becoming absorbed in the Renaissance revival of learning during his travels to Italy. Its first rector was Johannes Nauclerus.

Its present name was conferred on it in 1769 by Duke Karl Eugen who appended his first name to that of the founder (Karls being the possessive form of Karl). The university later became the principal university of the kingdom of Württemberg. Today, it is one of nine state universities funded by the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg.

The Main Building ‘Neue Aula’ in July 2007The University of Tübingen has a history of innovative thought, particularly in theology, in which the university and the Tübinger Stift are famous to this day. Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560), the prime mover in building the German school system and a chief figure in the Protestant Reformation, helped establish its direction. Among Tübingen’s eminent students (and/or professors) have been the astronomer Johannes Kepler; the economist Horst Köhler (President of Germany); Joseph Ratzinger, former Cardinal and currently Pope Benedict XVI, poet Friedrich Hölderlin, and the philosophers Friedrich Schelling and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. “The Tübingen Three” refers to Hölderlin, Hegel and Schelling, who were roommates at the Tübinger Stift.

The university rose to the height of its prominence in the middle of the 19th century with the teachings of poet and civic leader Ludwig Uhland and the Protestant theologian Ferdinand Christian Baur, whose beliefs and disciples became known as the “Tübingen School” and which initiated historical analysis of Biblical texts, an approach also generally referred to as the Higher criticism. The University of Tübingen also was the first German university to establish a faculty of natural sciences, in 1863. DNA was discovered in 1868 at the University of Tübingen by Friedrich Miescher. Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, the first female Nobel Prize winner in medicine in Germany, also works in Tübingen. In Tübingen the faculty for economics and business was founded in 1817 as ‘Staatswissenschaftliche Fakultät’ and was the first of its kind in Germany.

Cala Bona Hotel
View of the harbour from Cala Bona Hotel, located in Majorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. The Hotel Cala Bona is located in a privileged area in the same fishing port and 100 meters from the beach.

Arrived 28th september for a two week stay. We were allocated pergola block, sea view with air conditioning. The view was brilliant of the pleasant harbour. I cannot fault the hotel for anything, the food was excellant as were the fantastic cleaning staff. Changed towels every day, and we did not even have to throw them on the floor. At this time of the year we had no difficulty finding sun beds by the lovely pool. We had most of our lunches at the Rope & Anchor next door. Thanks to Claire for ordering my wife 7up light for her shandy’s. The prices were very reasonable ( 2 euro for pint of San Miguel ) . The entertainment in the hotel seemed very good ( singers every night ), but we spent most of our evenings in the Argos bar round the corner by the sea drinking our sangria’s ( served by lovely Lorraine ). The only minus side of the holiday was the pathetic display of the Thomson First choice staff at Palma airport who directed us to the wrong area of the coach park to find our coach to Cala Bona. Eventually we found the coach, only to find the number we were given was not the one for the correct resort. All of this in horrendous rain – we were soaked when we got on the coach.

Had an excellent stay at the Hotel Cala Bona. Booked with Portland with air conditioning but no sea view avaiable. Contacted hotel prior to arrival and upgraded to sea view for 50 euros per week. In our opinion well worth it for lovely views of the harbour and the
“goings on” Reception on arrival extremely efficient and quick. We had a room in Nemo which was spacious, comfortable and very clean and had a great view. Food at all times to a high standard and I did notice that a lot of guests had a “full cooked” in the morning. Pool area well maintained with a pool bar serving light lunches. Plenty of sunbeds but there was a queue just before 8.00am to put towels out. On several occasions we arrived in the afternoon and had no difficulty finding a bed,.Evening entertainment was good especially John on a Saturday night. In fact the entertainment in other hotels was excellent . The Rod Stewart impersonator in the Levante was well worth watching. As mentioned previously this hotel caters for older guests many of whom return time and time again but I can see why so much so we have booked again for next year.

Hosei University

Tokyo Japan

Hosei University (法政大学, Hōsei daigaku?) is a private university based in Tokyo, Japan.

The university originated in a school of law, Tōkyō Hōgakusha (東京法学社, i.e. Tokyo company of law), established in 1880, and the following year renamed Tōkyō Hōgakkō (東京法学校, i.e. Tokyo school of law). This was from 1883 headed by Dr. Gustave Emile Boissonade, and was heavily influenced by the French legal tradition. It merged in 1889 with a school of French studies, Tōkyō Futsugakkō (東京仏学校, i.e. Tokyo French school), that had been founded three years earlier. It adopted the name Hosei University (法政大学, Hōsei daigaku, i.e. Tokyo university of law and politics) in 1903 and was recognized as a private university in 1920.

Other notable figures involved in its foundation include Dr. Masaaki Tomii, and Dr. Ume Kenjirō, “Father of the Japanese Civil Code”.

Hosei has three main campuses, which it calls Ichigaya, Koganei, and Tama. The Ichigaya campus is halfway between Ichigaya and Iidabashi stations in central Tokyo; its 26-story Boissonade Tower, completed in 2000, can be seen from either station. The campus has a city flavour but is still somewhat isolated from central Tokyo; the nearby presence of Yasukuni Shrine also contributes.

Sciences are studied at the Koganei campus to the west of Tokyo, and other subjects are split between Tama, which is near Hachiōji, and Ichigaya.

A June 2009 article by David McNeill in the Japan Times reported that since 2006 the administrators of the Ichigaya campus of Hosei had been involved in series of violent confrontations and arbitrary actions against activists representing the Japan Revolutionary Communist League and one of the organizations calling itself Zengakuren. According to the activists, the actions had included beating and detaining student protesters by campus security guards, expulsions, and posting student’s names on bulletin boards and internet sites.

The activists claim that the university’s reaction to student protests and activism has been excessively heavy-handed and that innocent student bystanders have been swept up in the university’s suppression. The University has not commented publicly on the issue, but states on its website that the crackdown was in response to disruption caused by the activists at the Ichigaya campus, including interference with teaching, assault and verbal threats against university staff members. After an anonymous letter to the Japan Times disputed McNeill’s summary and the claims by the activists that this included, McNeill said that 13 Hosei University students had been arrested during the conflict, with nine indicted and awaiting trial on charges ranging from trespassing to obstruction of law enforcement.

Live view of the Office in the State Wide Real Estate of Houghton, Michigan.

Welcome to 2010! We’re excited for a new decade and we expect it to be a great year! We’re getting busy with new listings and buyers writing offers, so it’s a great time to list or sell real estate in the Keweenaw of Michigan. Check out the street cam to the right–the 2nd annual Jibba Jabba Rail Jam is happening January 16 & 17 on Huron Street in Houghton, right along side the State Wide Building. We’re a core sponsor this year, so come on out and watch some great local community snowboard action this weekend. If you can’t make it, you are welcome to catch a few glimpses of it on the web cam. It updates several times a minute. Between now and then the snow is being positioned and shaped for the competition. Thanks for looking, and please call us at 906-482-6955 for all of your real estate needs. We sell more land than any other office in the area, and we sell homes in the four county area: Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon.

Summer is gone–it’s 40 outside and we’re having a beautiful Fall day in the Keweenaw. We’ve had a great summer as we sold a lot of real estate. And, the street reconstruction project on Shelden Avenue is complete. The new pavers and sidewalks are awesome, and the new street lighting really makes downtown Houghton shine. Come on downtown and check it out. There are fabulous buys to be had in local real estate, so it’s a great time to buy. Bank money is still very available for qualified borrowers, so let’s look at some land or a home and find you a new place in the sun here. Thank

Wildlife pond
A live view of a wildlife pond connected to Rush Lake on the Whitefish Chain located in Crosslake, Minnesota, part of the Brainerd Lakes Area

We’ve built our pond in our Sebastopol, California backyard, in the hole that was left when we took down our above ground pool (the deep end was dug in). We’ve used mostly native plants, many of which we have found along the roadsides from San Francisco, CA to Tillamook, OR. A lot of the fun in building this pond has been finding the plants, identifying them, and just seeing what will survive and what won’t. We’ve also collected our own rocks. One of our biggest joys is seeing all the `critters’ our pond supports, especially the dragonflies!
We encourage everyone to consider putting in a pond for wildlife.

As we’ve already mentioned, the world’s amphibian population is disappearing at an alarming rate. At the same time, natural wildlife ponds and bog areas are disappearing – being drained in both the countryside by encroaching development as well as in the back gardens of older homes. Environmentally unfriendly new trends in gardening mean that many house-owners are designing their gardens with no respect for how the local wildlife might interact with it. Besides excessive shingling and decking, another environmentally unfriendly aspect of garden design is the “water feature” Often created around a circulatory system involving electric pumps which passes water around a series of channels tubes and ramps – finally ending up in a concrete bucket or small pond with hard, high walls containing a few ornamental fish. This kind of “water feature” has nothing to do with harmonizing with the natural environment, even though people who create these so called stress relieving environs think it does!

You can play an important part in helping to reverse both this trend and in turn the increasing threats to our wetland wildlife – at the cost of just a few pounds – and you will also educationally benefit from this simple “life-creating” project.

Goldfish or any ornamental fish and wildlife ponds just don’t mix. If you want to build an ornamental pond then you are looking at the wrong web site. However, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t consider having both types of ponds in your garden (as long as they are at least 15 metres apart to prevent contamination of the natural pond).
It is simply untrue that fish keep down the algea in ponds. In fact fish generate excessive amounts of body waste, which causes a build up of sludge and other toxic based problems for other pond-life, plants and water. By laying out a fish-free wildlife pond in the right mix of shade and sunlight, your pond water will naturally manage itself throughout a yearly cycle.
Goldfish eat dragonfly eggs, newt eggs, toad eggs and many other pond insect eggs. Such fish are simply an alien species when added to a wildlife pond whereby the ecology of this mini bio-system is destroyed.
To enjoy a real wildlife pond you need a little patience at first before you begin to see signs of underwater life, but when it eventually kicks in, the diversity of creatures large and small will soon fullfill your wildest expectations. It will prove far more interesting than a few bored ornamental fish and at the same time you will be playing your part in VeggieGlobal’s aim to encourage the re-establishment of natural pond ecosystems across the world.

The bike meeting in Vienna
View of the bike meeting in Vienna. Located in the Danube Promenade bicycle path on A-1190 Vienna, Austria

There is hardly another city in the world where you will find more green areas than in Vienna. Parks and gardens enrich the city, ecouraging to take long walks, hiking and bike tours or simply enjoy a relaxing time in the nearby Prater, Vienna Woods and Lobau leisure areas. The same is true for the beaches and river banks of Old Danube, the Danube Island or the Danube Canal.

The City of Vienna aims to maintain and enhance these qualities.

The bicycle has reached an important place in the metropolitan area and therefore contributes substantially to climate protection in Vienna. The goal of the city of Vienna is to increase the traffic share of bicycles to 8% of the entire traffic volume until 2015. Currently the bicycle traffic network covers more than 1.000 square kilometres.
Besides various bike rental outlets, the Citybikes have been introduced in 2003. At 60 bike stations bicycles can be rented and also returned. Within the first hour, the use is free of charge. The only condition is a one-time registration via Cash Card, Citybike-Card or Credit Card.
