Oakland Zoo: Meerkat Den Webcam
Oakland Zoo: Meerkat Den – Meerkat Den at the Oakland Zoo

Oakland Zoo, in the past known as the Knowland Zoo, is a zoo located in southeastern Oakland, California, United States. Oakland Zoo is relatively small for a city of its size, but it contains modern exhibits. Many of its animals are kept in relatively “natural” habitats, and expanded natural habitats are planned. The newly completed Valley Children’s Zoo is a good example of where the zoo is headed, with interactive exhibits, state of the art animal housing facilities and children’s play areas. The Zoo is nationally known for its excellent elephant exhibit and has been praised for allowing their elephants to roam freely.

Naturalist Henry A. Snow established the Oakland Zoo in 1922 on 19th St and Harrison St in downtown Oakland. Snow Park now occupies the site of the Zoo’s first home. Over the years the zoo relocated several times: to Sequoia Park, Joaquin Miller Park and finally in 1939 to Durant Park. Under Joseph R. Knowland, Chairman of the California State Park Commission, California purchased the land and in 1950 renamed the park to Joseph Knowland State Arboretum and Park.[2] The East Bay Zoological Society (EBZS), founded in 1936 by Henry Snow’s son, Sidney, has had a long relationship with the Oakland Zoo. At the time of its founding, EBZS was known as the Alameda County Botanical and Zoological Society.

Although EBZS has always been involved with zoo projects and operations to some extent, it was not until after major development of the zoo from 1958-1965 that the EBZS’s role increased dramatically. Through their efforts, money was raised to develop the African Veldt (1965), the Australian Outback (1975) and the original tiger exhibit (1980). In 1977, the EBZS purchased the food, rides and Children’s Zoo concessions.

In 1982 the EBZS entered into an agreement with the City of Oakland to manage the zoo and develop it under non-profit status. The zoo has flourished since that time. In 1985, Joel Parrott, DVM, was hired as Executive Director of the Oakland Zoo. Many new exhibits have been created, including those for the Hamadryas Baboons and the Chimpanzees. A new, spacious elephant exhibit was built in 1987. The current sun bear exhibit was finished in 1995 and was featured on Animal Planet “Ultimate Zoos.” The White-Handed Gibbons now live on a lush island in the heart of the Rainforest. The African Savanna, with giraffes, camels, lions, elephants, meerkats, hyenas and more was completed in 1998.

The Education Center opened its new doors in 1999 with the new main entrance following soon after in summer 2001 (see picture). In autumn of 2001, a new Squirrel Monkey exhibit opened along with a larger, newly renovated Tiger exhibit. In the spring of 2007, the four dromedary camels were moved to a larger, fenced enclosure uphill from their old enclosure.

During 2009, as a result of the recession, EBZS’ revenues have declined and EBZS has been forced to seek subsidies from the City of Oakland. The City has also placed several “zoo keepers” directly on its payroll. The City of Oakland has a tree preservation ordinance, requiring that anyone wanting to cut down or severely trim a mature tree on private property obtain a permit from the City. During 2009, it has been repeatedly alleged that EBZS’ employees have surreptitiously cut down more than 300 trees throughout the city, from public and private property, in order to provide “snack food” for the zoo’s giraffes and elephants, in the form of green, new growth tree branches which EBZS cannot otherwise afford to purchase from commercial sources.

Haparanda (Finnish: Haaparanta, meaning aspen + river bank) is a locality and the seat of Haparanda Municipality in Norrbotten County, Sweden with 4,778 inhabitants in 2005.[1] It is adjacent to Tornio, Finland. Haparanda has a population of approximately 4,800 (and an area 3,94 km²) of out of a municipal total of 10,200 inhabitants.

Haparanda is, despite its small population, for historical reasons often still referred to as a city. Statistics Sweden, however, only counts localities with more than 10,000 inhabitants as cities.

The municipality itself, on the other hand, uses the term Haparanda stad (City of Haparanda) not only for the town itself, but for its whole territory (927 km2).

When Sweden lost Finland in 1809, the border was drawn along the Rivers Tornio and Muonio. The town of Tornio, located on the island Suensaari in the river delta became part of the Grand Duchy of Finland within the Russian Empire as czar Alexander I insisted. (Finland declared independence in 1917).

At that time the town of Tornio was dominated by Swedish-speaking merchants and crafters, forming a linguistic island surrounded by Finns on the country side. After the war many of the Swedes started to develop the small village Haaparanta across the border instead, eventually leaving Tornio unilingually Finnish. Haparanda was made a market town (köping) in 1821 and received its city charter in 1842.

Ucluelet (pronounced /ˌjuˈkluː.lət/) is a district municipality (population about 1,500) on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Ucluelet means “people of the safe harbour” in the indigenous Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) language.

Ucluelet is located at the northern edge of Barkley Sound, 288 kilometres northwest of the British Columbia provincial capital, Victoria, on the outer west coast of Vancouver Island.

The closest city is Port Alberni approximately 100 km to the east. The District of Tofino is 40 km northwest of Ucluelet on Highway 4.

In between Tofino and Ucluelet is the Long Beach unit of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Barkley Sound lies southeast of Ucluelet and is a marine area that features the Broken Islands Group unit of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The fishing and scientific research community of Bamfield lies on its farther shore, and is the site of Kiix?in (Keeshan), a major archaeological site and National Historic Site of Canada protecting a Nuu-chah-nulth fortress.

Archaeological evidence indicated the presence of First Nations along the outer west coast of Vancouver Island for at least 4,300 years. British Columbia’s recorded history began with European explorers searching for the legendary Northwest Passage.

It was on the west coast of Vancouver Island, at Nootka Sound, 100 km north of Ucluelet, that Juan Pérez anchored and traded in 1774. In 1775 Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra sailed along the coast of Vancouver Island, heading north for Alaska. He did not stop but roughly charted the coast in the vicinity of Kyuquot Sound.[1] Captain James Cook of the British Navy anchored in Nootka Sound and went ashore in 1778. Maritime fur traders followed, such as Charles William Barkley, captain of the Imperial Eagle, who in 1787 arrived near Ucluelet harbour in Barkley Sound in search of sea otter pelts.

In 1870, fur sealers came to the area seeking ports for vessels working the Bering Sea sealing grounds. Captain Francis, the owner of several sealing schooners, established a trading post in Ucluelet harbour. Ucluelet began to grow along with the sealing industry and became a bustling little town. In the 1890’s more settlers began arriving on the news of pending road access from Port Alberni. Fishing was excellent and gold was to be found on Florencia Bay. The stories of gold were correct, but it was so fine and in such little quantity that it could not be worked profitably.

The Presbyterian Church built a Mission House and school and a doctor was dispatched to the area in 1898. By 1900, more settlers had moved to the west coast of Vancouver Island. Development began bringing infrastructure and services of all kinds. The Canadian Pacific Railway operated a small freight boat sailing from Victoria three times a month. In 1903 a whaling station was established in Barkley Sound. In Ucluelet a lighthouse, a government telegraph office, and a lifeboat station were built. As the First World War began, the fishing industry had started.

When World War II began the Government of Canada took measures to protect Vancouver Island’s west coast from potential invasions. The military established a seaplane base in Ucluelet and a land base at Long Beach. The road to Tofino, which had been worked on for thirty years was finally completed.

University of Tübingen

Eberhard Karls University, Tübingen (German: Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, sometimes called the “Eberhardina Carolina”) is a public university located in the city of Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is one of Germany’s oldest universities, internationally noted in medicine, natural sciences and the humanities. In the area of German Studies (German: Germanistik) it has been ranked first among all German universities for many years. Tübingen is one of five classical “university towns” in Germany; the other four being Marburg, Göttingen, Freiburg and Heidelberg. The university is associated with some Nobel laureates, especially in the fields of medicine and chemistry.

Currently, around 22,000 students are enrolled. The 17 hospitals in Tübingen affiliated with the university’s faculty of medicine have 1,500 patient beds, and cater to 66,000 in-patients and 200,000 out-patients on an annual basis.

The University of Tübingen undertakes a broad range of research projects in various fields. The most prominent ones are to be found among the natural sciences. The Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research, for instance, focuses on general, cognitive and cellular neurology as well as neurodegeneration. The Centre for Interdisciplinary Clinical Research deals primarily with cell biology in diagnostics and therapy of organ system diseases.

The University of Tübingen was founded in 1477 by Count Eberhard V (Eberhard im Bart, 1445 – 1496), later the first Duke of Württemberg, a civic and ecclesiastic reformer who established the school after becoming absorbed in the Renaissance revival of learning during his travels to Italy. Its first rector was Johannes Nauclerus.

Its present name was conferred on it in 1769 by Duke Karl Eugen who appended his first name to that of the founder (Karls being the possessive form of Karl). The university later became the principal university of the kingdom of Württemberg. Today, it is one of nine state universities funded by the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg.

The Main Building ‘Neue Aula’ in July 2007The University of Tübingen has a history of innovative thought, particularly in theology, in which the university and the Tübinger Stift are famous to this day. Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560), the prime mover in building the German school system and a chief figure in the Protestant Reformation, helped establish its direction. Among Tübingen’s eminent students (and/or professors) have been the astronomer Johannes Kepler; the economist Horst Köhler (President of Germany); Joseph Ratzinger, former Cardinal and currently Pope Benedict XVI, poet Friedrich Hölderlin, and the philosophers Friedrich Schelling and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. “The Tübingen Three” refers to Hölderlin, Hegel and Schelling, who were roommates at the Tübinger Stift.

The university rose to the height of its prominence in the middle of the 19th century with the teachings of poet and civic leader Ludwig Uhland and the Protestant theologian Ferdinand Christian Baur, whose beliefs and disciples became known as the “Tübingen School” and which initiated historical analysis of Biblical texts, an approach also generally referred to as the Higher criticism. The University of Tübingen also was the first German university to establish a faculty of natural sciences, in 1863. DNA was discovered in 1868 at the University of Tübingen by Friedrich Miescher. Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, the first female Nobel Prize winner in medicine in Germany, also works in Tübingen. In Tübingen the faculty for economics and business was founded in 1817 as ‘Staatswissenschaftliche Fakultät’ and was the first of its kind in Germany.

Cala Bona Hotel
View of the harbour from Cala Bona Hotel, located in Majorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. The Hotel Cala Bona is located in a privileged area in the same fishing port and 100 meters from the beach.

Arrived 28th september for a two week stay. We were allocated pergola block, sea view with air conditioning. The view was brilliant of the pleasant harbour. I cannot fault the hotel for anything, the food was excellant as were the fantastic cleaning staff. Changed towels every day, and we did not even have to throw them on the floor. At this time of the year we had no difficulty finding sun beds by the lovely pool. We had most of our lunches at the Rope & Anchor next door. Thanks to Claire for ordering my wife 7up light for her shandy’s. The prices were very reasonable ( 2 euro for pint of San Miguel ) . The entertainment in the hotel seemed very good ( singers every night ), but we spent most of our evenings in the Argos bar round the corner by the sea drinking our sangria’s ( served by lovely Lorraine ). The only minus side of the holiday was the pathetic display of the Thomson First choice staff at Palma airport who directed us to the wrong area of the coach park to find our coach to Cala Bona. Eventually we found the coach, only to find the number we were given was not the one for the correct resort. All of this in horrendous rain – we were soaked when we got on the coach.

Had an excellent stay at the Hotel Cala Bona. Booked with Portland with air conditioning but no sea view avaiable. Contacted hotel prior to arrival and upgraded to sea view for 50 euros per week. In our opinion well worth it for lovely views of the harbour and the
“goings on” Reception on arrival extremely efficient and quick. We had a room in Nemo which was spacious, comfortable and very clean and had a great view. Food at all times to a high standard and I did notice that a lot of guests had a “full cooked” in the morning. Pool area well maintained with a pool bar serving light lunches. Plenty of sunbeds but there was a queue just before 8.00am to put towels out. On several occasions we arrived in the afternoon and had no difficulty finding a bed,.Evening entertainment was good especially John on a Saturday night. In fact the entertainment in other hotels was excellent . The Rod Stewart impersonator in the Levante was well worth watching. As mentioned previously this hotel caters for older guests many of whom return time and time again but I can see why so much so we have booked again for next year.

Hosei University

Tokyo Japan

Hosei University (法政大学, Hōsei daigaku?) is a private university based in Tokyo, Japan.

The university originated in a school of law, Tōkyō Hōgakusha (東京法学社, i.e. Tokyo company of law), established in 1880, and the following year renamed Tōkyō Hōgakkō (東京法学校, i.e. Tokyo school of law). This was from 1883 headed by Dr. Gustave Emile Boissonade, and was heavily influenced by the French legal tradition. It merged in 1889 with a school of French studies, Tōkyō Futsugakkō (東京仏学校, i.e. Tokyo French school), that had been founded three years earlier. It adopted the name Hosei University (法政大学, Hōsei daigaku, i.e. Tokyo university of law and politics) in 1903 and was recognized as a private university in 1920.

Other notable figures involved in its foundation include Dr. Masaaki Tomii, and Dr. Ume Kenjirō, “Father of the Japanese Civil Code”.

Hosei has three main campuses, which it calls Ichigaya, Koganei, and Tama. The Ichigaya campus is halfway between Ichigaya and Iidabashi stations in central Tokyo; its 26-story Boissonade Tower, completed in 2000, can be seen from either station. The campus has a city flavour but is still somewhat isolated from central Tokyo; the nearby presence of Yasukuni Shrine also contributes.

Sciences are studied at the Koganei campus to the west of Tokyo, and other subjects are split between Tama, which is near Hachiōji, and Ichigaya.

A June 2009 article by David McNeill in the Japan Times reported that since 2006 the administrators of the Ichigaya campus of Hosei had been involved in series of violent confrontations and arbitrary actions against activists representing the Japan Revolutionary Communist League and one of the organizations calling itself Zengakuren. According to the activists, the actions had included beating and detaining student protesters by campus security guards, expulsions, and posting student’s names on bulletin boards and internet sites.

The activists claim that the university’s reaction to student protests and activism has been excessively heavy-handed and that innocent student bystanders have been swept up in the university’s suppression. The University has not commented publicly on the issue, but states on its website that the crackdown was in response to disruption caused by the activists at the Ichigaya campus, including interference with teaching, assault and verbal threats against university staff members. After an anonymous letter to the Japan Times disputed McNeill’s summary and the claims by the activists that this included, McNeill said that 13 Hosei University students had been arrested during the conflict, with nine indicted and awaiting trial on charges ranging from trespassing to obstruction of law enforcement.

United States

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is located in Huntsville, Alabama. The Center includes a museum designed to showcase the hardware of the U.S. space program and the facilities of the United States Space Camp.

The idea for the museum was first proposed by Dr. Wernher von Braun, who led the efforts of the United States to land the first man on the moon. The center opened in 1970 as the Alabama Space and Rocket Center on land donated from the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal. It houses interactive science exhibits, more than 1,500 permanent rocketry and space exploration artifacts, as well as many rotating rocketry and space-related exhibits. The center is located on Interstate 565 at exit 15, near NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

The newest addition to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center is the Davidson Center for Space Exploration, named after Dr. Julian Davidson founder of Davidson Technologies.Davidson Center opened January 31, 2008. The Davidson Center was designed to house the authentic Saturn V rocket (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) and many other space exploration exhibits. The vehicle is elevated above the floor surface with separated stages and engines exposed, so visitors have the opportunity to walk underneath the rocket. The Davidson Center also features a new 3D movie theater, in addition to the IMAX Theater in the original museum.

In 2008, Good Morning America named the Saturn V one of the Seven Wonders of America (ranked 5th), and televised a segment honoring the Saturn V from the Davidson Center.

From the roar of mighty rocket engines to extraordinary scientific discoveries about our world and our universe, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., stands at the forefront of the nation’s space exploration mission — just as it has done for five decades.

The Marshall Center became NASA’s first field center July 1, 1960. Today it supports the whole spectrum of the agency’s crucial work: propulsion, engineering, science, space operations, and project and program management. With its talented, skilled and diverse work force; extensive practical experience; and state-of-the-art laboratories and test facilities, Marshall thrives at the intersection of science and exploration.

What do we seek to accomplish? The answer to that question hasn’t changed in 50 years: discoveries that increase our understanding of the cosmos and our place in it; improve our ability to safely live and work in space; and deliver practical breakthroughs here on Earth that protect the planet and improve life for all humanity.

Live view of the Office in the State Wide Real Estate of Houghton, Michigan.

Welcome to 2010! We’re excited for a new decade and we expect it to be a great year! We’re getting busy with new listings and buyers writing offers, so it’s a great time to list or sell real estate in the Keweenaw of Michigan. Check out the street cam to the right–the 2nd annual Jibba Jabba Rail Jam is happening January 16 & 17 on Huron Street in Houghton, right along side the State Wide Building. We’re a core sponsor this year, so come on out and watch some great local community snowboard action this weekend. If you can’t make it, you are welcome to catch a few glimpses of it on the web cam. It updates several times a minute. Between now and then the snow is being positioned and shaped for the competition. Thanks for looking, and please call us at 906-482-6955 for all of your real estate needs. We sell more land than any other office in the area, and we sell homes in the four county area: Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon.

Summer is gone–it’s 40 outside and we’re having a beautiful Fall day in the Keweenaw. We’ve had a great summer as we sold a lot of real estate. And, the street reconstruction project on Shelden Avenue is complete. The new pavers and sidewalks are awesome, and the new street lighting really makes downtown Houghton shine. Come on downtown and check it out. There are fabulous buys to be had in local real estate, so it’s a great time to buy. Bank money is still very available for qualified borrowers, so let’s look at some land or a home and find you a new place in the sun here. Thank
